Those Who Are Just Looking
Though we believe passionately in membership of the local church as part of living out a life dedicated to God, we also believe in being a safe place in which people have permission to ask questions, to disagree, and to investigate for themselves.
The Trinity Of Father, Son And Holy Spirit
We believe in one God, who exists as a trinity of three Persons.
The members of the Trinity are distinct from one another, and each member of the Trinity is equally God.
There is subordination within the Trinity: scripture shows that the Holy Spirit is subordinate to the Father and the Son, and the Son is subordinate to the Father. The individual members of the Trinity carry out different roles.
The Ultimate Authority Of The Bible
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work
(2 Timothy 3:15-17).
A Personal Relationship With God
But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
The Power Of Prayer
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Baptism In Water
Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”
Baptism does not contribute to salvation, as illustrated in the record of the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43), but is an outward testimony of the inward change in a believer’s life.
Christian baptism is an act of obedience to the Lord after salvation, and although baptism is closely associated with salvation, it is not a requirement to be saved.
The Bible that the proper order of events is (1) a person believes in the Lord Jesus, and (2) is baptized. (See Acts 2:41 & Acts 16:14–15).
The Church Family
We embrace people of all ages, backgrounds, cultures etc. God loves the entire world (John 3:16) and we are asked to make disciples of all nations (people-groups).
Baptism In The Holy Spirit And Use Of Spiritual Gifts
“For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink”
(1 Corinthians 12:13).
We believe, on the basis of the above passage, that “all” have been baptized by the Spirit—all believers have received the baptism, synonymous with salvation, and it is not a special experience for only a few.
We recognise three biblical lists of the gifts of the Spirit (also known as spiritual gifts) in Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; and 1 Corinthians 12:28.
Romans 12 identifies prophecy, service, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, and mercy.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 identifies the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:28 identifies healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Sacrificial Giving Of Money, Time And Resources
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully
We will help you identify your gifting, and work to enable you to grow and develop your God-given potential.
Serving In The Church
We believe that each ministry, whether youth leadership, children's ministry, worship leading, preaching or eldership, is a destination in and of itself, not a stepping-stone to 'promotion'.
We encourage all church members to prayerfully choose one thing and do it excellently. We will help you in this.
Singleness And Marriage
Singleness and marriage are gifts from God.
“I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am.”
(1 Corinthians 7:7-8)
“The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman,” for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”
God created man and then made woman to complement him. In the Bible marriage is God’s “fix” for the fact that:
“It is not good for the man to be alone”
Ephesians 5 teaches that a successful biblical marriage involves both the husband and the wife fulfilling certain roles:
“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior”
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”
“In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church”
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”
The Responsibilities Of Leaders In The Church
(Including Ephesians 4 Ministries)
Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate,self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgement as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
(1 Timothy 3:1-13)
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
(1 Peter 5:1-3)
We will need leaders in every area. Leadership in specific ministry areas are a destination in their own right. Leaders will be required to fulfil the vision in their ministry.
Leaders will be expected to be courteous and responsive, replying to messages / calls within 48 hours (unless away on holidays etc), even if it is simply to say, ‘I can’t answer this right now, but I will get back to you soon’.
Respecting Leadership In The Church
Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you
Embrace leadership will seek to support and encourage you, and to help you grow in your God-given abilities.
Church Planting And Multiplication
As the apostle Paul travelled through an area, he always tried to spend enough time in each city to establish a local body of believers and to train the leadership (Acts 14:21-23).
Later, he would try to revisit those churches to confirm and encourage them in the faith (Acts 15:41; 1 Thessalonians 3:2).
The churches he established would then begin to send out missionaries themselves, and so the work of church planting continued (1 Thessalonians 1:8).
Discipleship Of One Another
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Pastoral Care For One Another
So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
The Apostle Paul said:
I have laid a foundation and another builds on it
(1 Cor. 3:10).
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
Serving Darlington, The Region, The UK And The Nations
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Church Membership will be reviewed and offered at least once a year, for those who wish to commit to the vision and values of Embrace, as outlined above.
